The decision to blow open five tank cars and burn the toxic chemical inside them after a freight train derailed in Eastern Ohio last year wasn't justified, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board told Congress Wednesday. “There was another option: let it cool down.”However, that information was never relayed to Ohio Gov. But the agency won't release its final report on what caused the Feb. 3, 2023, derailment until it holds another hearing this June. "The successful controlled release prevented a potentially catastrophic uncontrolled explosion.”Krissy Ferguson, 49, has not been able to return home since the derailment. The NTSB has said that it appears an overheating bearing on one of the railcars caused the derailment.

Scientists have said carbon removal is needed to keep climate goals alive. Otherwise, the enormous price tag for world-scale carbon removal would need to fall to governments if there is any chance of these projects surviving. A major concern is that DAC technology is both expensive and unproven at scale. More mature carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which traps emissions at a point source like a smokestack, also requires a rapid scale up to make a difference. Their money will be made instead by marketing carbon removal credits to corporations not involved in fossil fuels that wish to offset unavoidable emissions, or to governments seeking to stay on track with climate targets.

A piece of equipment called a distributor used to hold trays of limestone for capturing carbon is seen at the Heirloom Carbon Technologies facility in Brisbane, California, U.S. February 1, 2023. Direct Air Capture such as that used by Heirloom can secure the CO2, but it is not yet clear whether it can do so at a price that makes the technology practical. The new facility, which uses crushed limestone to capture 1,000 tonnes a year, is part of a ramp up that Heirloom says will cut costs. Current industry prices for carbon removal by direct air capture are around $600-$1,000 a tonne, one person familiar with the situation said. Oil pump jack is seen in front of displayed U.S. dollar banknote and decreasing stock graph in this illustration taken, October 8, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Back in June the boss of $220 billion UK oil major Shell (SHEL.L), Wael Sawan, told investors mergers and acquisitions were not his priority. The decision of $430 billion Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) and $295 billion Chevron (CVX.N) to acquire $60 billion Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD.N) and $53 billion Hess (HES.N) respectively ought to change the game. But it would remain a stretch for either to ape their U.S. peers and buy a big oil group. Hess investors will receive 1.025 shares of Chevron for each share held, worth $171 per share based on the closing price on Oct. 20.

Since our shareholders are getting Chevron stock, we get to participate in the upside, and also get a higher dividend," he said. He added that Hess shareholders who keep their shares in their combined company will see their dividend rise from $1.75 to $6 per share following the close of the deal. Exxon and Chevron are keen on these deals because they want to avoid the risk of exploring unproven reserves as oil and gas become scarcer. Exxon and Chevron had $29.5 billion and $9.3 billion in cash, respectively, as of the end of June. Keeping dividends and share buybacks strong helps compensate existing Exxon and Chevron shareholders for the dilution incurred in the all-stock acquisitions.

A blowout September jobs report , surging bond yields and expectations for higher interest rates that last a while stoked big price swings in the stock market lately, leaving investors on edge. "If you're an investor, you love the idea of wild swings because it means more things are going to get mispriced...Volatility is a huge plus to the real investor." 'Gambling mentality' Buffett's recent purchase of a big chunk of Occidental Petroleum is an example of taking advantage of market volatility. Although longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields eased from 16-year highs on Wednesday, investors remain concerned that the elevated levels may pressure equities. Worries about U.S. government spending and its ballooning budget deficit have added to uncertainty around the interest rates trajectory, contributing to a steep selloff that have caused a rout in Treasury prices and a spike in yields.
